John Wick 5 Officially in Development and AAA Game in the Works

Until now, talk of a possible fifth John Wick installment has been muted. Even though Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves had planned the fourth installment as a finale, the idea of looking for a formula to continue the main plot of the saga was on the table of the production company, especially considering the spectacular figures it is throwing in the cinema (425 million dollars for a film with a budget of 100 million, good business). That’s why, in a meeting with shareholders, Motion Picture Group chairman Joe Drake could not help but take the bull by the horns and openly confirm that there are early plans for a fifth part, joining an “AAA video game”, which has been rumored since last year, and the projects of The Continental and Ballerina.

“We’re now moving across that franchise, not just in the AAA video game space, but looking at what the regular cadence of spin-offs, television really growing that universe so that there is a steady cadence of a franchise that there’s clear appetite by the audience,” Drake explained. “What is official is that, as you know, Ballerina is the first spinoff that comes out next year. We’re in development on three others, including [John Wick 5] and including television series, The Continental, will be airing soon. And so, we’re building out the world and when that five movie comes, will be organic -- will be organically grown out of how we’re starting to tell those stories. But you can rely on a regular cadence of John Wick.”

To expand a multimillion-dollar franchise that surprisingly came out of a low-budget film that no one expected much of. And to do it in a way that remains attractive, that doesn’t break or become a parody, especially considering how tied the tetralogy is to the figure of its director and star. Quite a challenge, but it is clear that the numbers are forcing Lionsgate to try. Certainly, the reception of The Continental and Ballerina will influence decisions on how to develop this coveted regularity.
