Jonathan Majors’ case is going back to trial after a failed dismissal attempt

Marvel Studios might end up without its Kang after all, as Jonathan Major’s motion to dismiss his case has been rejected. This is what we know.

Jonathan Majors

Jonathan Majors is back in the hot seat after a motion to dismiss his trial for charges of domestic violence has been dismissed, putting his future as Marvel Studios’ next big villain in doubt.

Originally charged back in March of 2023, Majors had been accused of strangulation, assault and harassment of his girlfriend at the time. At that moment, Majors agreed to abide by a restraining order and have no contact with the victim, after she claimed head and neck injuries (according to the police report of the situation). The actor’s lawyer claimed to present evidence that the victim was lying, at least about where she was at the time of the attack, which gave the actor the chance to file a motion to request that certain parts of the evidence remain concealed to the public due to the case being “high profile”.

The main argument was that should that information be revealed, it would “limit Mr. Majors’ right to a fair trial.” while it was never specified just what that meant, it is believed that the defense attorneys wanted to avoid a similar situation to what occurred with the Depp v Heard trial, which saw extensive coverage of said trial between actors Johnny Depp and Amber Heard in which they were subjected to revealing much of their personal lives. This would in turn be considered harmful to both of their careers, and should Majors fall into the same situation it would mean the loss of career-defining opportunities for the actor.

Major’s attorney, Priya Chaudhry, stated at the time that the actor was “completely innocent and is provably the victim of an altercation with a woman he knows,” claiming that they were gathering evidence to present it to the District Attorney of New York for the charges to be eventually dropped.

Majors could lose his place at Marvel, and the industry beyond it

Majors, who has recently had prominent roles in large blockbusters such as Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, could see his entire career disappear because of the charges made against him. His future at Marvel Studios could be harmed as the great villain of Phase 5, Kang the Conqueror, of which we already had a first look in the Loki Series(both in Season 1 and the ongoing Season 2), while in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania he acted as the main antagonist. But what other projects is Majors involved in as Kang or one of its variants?

The actor was set to be an ever-present figure in almost every upcoming film produced by Marvel Studios, specifically Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, and its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars. However his career goes far beyond Marvel, as he was previously also in Creed III and HBO’s Lovecraft Country.

The D.A. has denied the motion to dismiss his case and instead turn the investigation toward Grace Jabbari, the victim of the assault. Whether or not the allegations are true is for the court to decide, but the fact that Major’s career continues to be on the line is undeniable.
