Josh Brolin has turned down the new DC Universe, rejecting a role as Green Lantern
James Gunn’s DC Universe has lost the chance to bring Josh Brolin as one of the Green Lanterns, as the actor declined the offer presented to him.
It’s not easy saying no to being part of a multiyear cinematic project like the DC Universe being built by James Gunn, even though it is in its infancy at the moment, and its first phase, titled Gods and Monsters, has not even started. A few days ago we learned that Josh Brolin was the first option to play Hal Jordan/Green Lantern in the series ‘Lanterns’, which will stream on MAX, but the actor has turned down the role, forcing Gunn to think about other alternatives.
According to the Hollywood rumor mill, among these alternatives are names like Matthew McConaughey, Chris Pine, Ewan McGregor, and others. On the other hand, Brolin’s refusal may be understandable due to his boredom with superhero movies, since he is one of the few who has played two characters from the Marvel Universe: Thanos, and Cable in ‘Deadpool 2′.
What is ‘Lanterns’ about?
‘Lanterns’ looks like a pretty enticing project, since it has Chris Mundy, creator of ‘Ozark’, the hit Netflix series, at the helm. In addition, Damon Lindelof, who has already fulfilled this role in the series ‘Watchmen’ of MAX, in addition to ‘Lost’, and Tom King, one of the most renowned scriptwriters that DC Comics currently has, are both currently working on the script for the show. The series will begin filming next January 2025 in Atlanta and is scheduled to wrap up around June.
The reason Gunn is looking for a veteran actor for the role of Jordan is because the idea of the series is for him to be a mentor to John Stewart, Another of the most important Green Lanterns in DC Comics. According to what has been said, the series will have elements of ‘True Detective’, as both heroes will investigate a murder committed on Earth, although with implications beyond our planet.
Taking into account the filming date, it is likely that the premiere of ‘Lanterns’ will be around the beginning of 2026, since as Gunn himself has assured, the second half of 2025 will witness the premiere of the second season of ‘Peacemaker’.
