Kevin Conroy’s final performance as Batman is a perfect farewell for the actor

The last performance of Kevin Conroy as Batman has been released, and it’s an incredibly emotional sendoff.

For many people, anytime Batman is mentioned our minds immediately go to the 90s animated series that brought us Mark Hamill as the Joker and, of course, Kevin Conroy as the most iconic version of Batman yet. Both reprised their roles throughout the years and became so tightly connected to the characters that it’s almost impossible to not expect them to return. Sadly, Conroy passed away back in 2022, but before that, he had worked on several projects, which meant that we still got to hear his gravelly Batman voice a few times more.

Now, after his appearance in the ill-fated Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League as a brainwashed, evil Batman that left fans with a bad aftertaste, it appears as though his true final performance has been revealed. It’s extremely short, lasting only a few lines, but “Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths - Part Three”, the last in an animated multiversal DC Comics series of movies, released today with the short scene of the classic characters battle it out once more as the world comes to an end.

As Batman watches in horror on top of a Gotham City rooftop as a massive wall of energy destroys the world around him (listen, it’s the third part in a story all about multiversal destruction. Some things have happened before), the Joker jumps out at him from behind to start fighting. He taunts him about fighting him as the world ends, asking “who cares” as everything comes to a sudden stop. This is where Conroy responds with a couple of lines that feel too perfect, as this was possibly his final time in the recording booth:

“I care, Joker. About Gotham. About justice,” begins Conroy’s Batman. “And if it has to end, at least I go out like this… being Batman.

Is this truly the last time we might hear Kevin Conroy as Batman? For the moment, the answer is yes. As mentioned above the actor had an unknown amount of projects he’d been working on before his passing, so there is a possibility that some other performance, whether as Batman or as something else, is still in the production pipeline. But even if it happens, it’s quite possible this will still be the best farewell to the character he could have had.
