Kojima was so sick in 2020 that he even wrote a Last Will

Hideo Kojima had a lot of inspirations for Physint, his upcoming action-espionage game, with one of those being his own fear of dying.

Hideo Kojima recently announced Physint, a new action espionage game on which he will begin working with PlayStation starting in 2025. The Japanese creator spoke more about the game during an interview, also confessing how sick he became in 2020 and the words by Guillermo del Toro that saved him in one of the moments of greatest doubt in his entire career.

The interviewer asked Kojima about Physint and if this meant a new Metal Gear made by Kojima Productions, to which he responded: “we are going to make a new action and espionage game in collaboration with Sony. It will be a game and a movie at the same time. That’s why we were at Sony Pictures. A new action and spy game. Of course, it will be a game. However, if your mother comes in and sees you playing, she will think you are watching a movie.”

The incomparable Hideo Kojima

During the interview, Kojima noted that he’s “still not sure how far we can go. Why did I decide to do this? First of all, because I became independent and wanted to do something new with my own IP. So, to challenge myself, I first did Death Stranding. Then, to create a franchise, I made Death Stranding 2. And I wanted to make something even newer, so I started working on OD. And since then, there have been a lot of new ideas.”

Kojima continued, mentioning that “In the last eight years, every day on social media, from users all over the world, people asked me to create another Metal Gear and things like that. Then, I fell ill in 2020. It was also during the pandemic, so I was sick and isolated during all of that. They even operated on me. And I thought: “I can’t take it anymore.” I was at my lowest point and felt like I couldn’t make games again. I even wrote a testament. And at that moment, I realized that people die. But last year I turned 60. I’ll be 70 in ten years. I hope I never retire. That said, if users want it that much, I thought I should change my priorities a bit.”I still want to do new things, but I have decided to make an action and espionage game.”

Finally, he spoke about his possible approach to Hollywood and the enormous importance Guillermo del Toro had in a moment when he was full of doubts: “I receive many requests from Hollywood to make films, but I have rejected them. Because now I have my own company. I can’t leave it for 1 or 2 years to go make a movie. The company would collapse. I was in a difficult situation. And I spoke with Guillermo del Toro about it. And he said, “Hideo, what you’re doing is already a movie. Continue as before.” “His words saved me”:
