Larian Studios thinks everyone underestimated Baldur’s Gate 3, not just Microsoft

Baldur’s Gate 3 managed to surprise the entire industry with its incredibly successful launch, and after leaks revealed Microsoft passed on the opportunity, the devs responded.

Update:
Baldur's Gate 3 lanzamiento Xbox confirmado 2023

The expectations about Baldur’s Gate 3 were high, but even so, the title managed to surpass everything imaginable and become in its own right one of the best games ever. The massive leak of the medium and long term plans of Xbox is giving a lot to talk about, and among some of these leaks, is the rejection of the company to adding Baldur’s Gate 3 to Xbox Game Pass. As a result, the director of publishing at Larian Studios, Michael Douse, has come out in defense of Microsoft, highlighting that everyone in the industry misjudged how Baldur’s Gate 3 would perform, and not just Microsoft.

As reported by VGC, Michael Douse’s statements are forceful and convey the company’s general feeling about the gamesthey make: “In their defence, so did everyone else. Same with DOS2. Comes with the genre, and the way we approach things, and the way we execute things. There just isn’t any existing data that could have told anyone how BG3 was going to perform. We just had to take giant spooky leaps.”

According to the leaks, Microsoft estimated that securing the game for release on Xbox Game Pass would cost them only $5 million dollars. Compared to how much they were willing to pay for other titles, like Assassin’s Creed Mirage for $100 Million, or EA’s Star Wars Jedi: Survivor for $300 Million, the figure now seems like an unfortunate miscalculation.

The historic success of Baldur’s Gate 3

A game to remember, a now immortal work that obtained some of the highest marks of the year from critics around the world. In MeriStation Spain, the main review states that: “Baldur’s Gate 3 He has so much to say that he has left us speechless. It is the best RPG of recent years, a natural heir to the previous installments and an evolution with respect to Divinity Original Sin 2. Extensive, deep, dense, full of options, the work of Larian Studios catches you like in a spider’s web , the hours pass as if a spell had altered time and space.”
