When looking back at the careers of some of today’s best actresses, one can’t help but be surprised by the number of great films that go unnoticed. One actress for whom this happens frequently is Léa Seydoux. The French actress has starred in major films that haven’t reached a wide audience, yet are of immense quality. ‘Sister’ (2012) is one of them.

This is ‘Sister,’ the standout film starring Léa Seydoux that not everyone knows about

‘Sister’ (‘L’enfant d’en haut’ in French) is a drama directed by Ursula Meier that falls within a tradition of contemporary European cinema focused on marginalization, childhood, and dysfunctional family relationships. Set in the Swiss Alps, the film builds its narrative around a stark contrast between the luxurious ski resort and the impoverished valley where the protagonists live, which serves as a symbolic axis of the social inequality that runs through the entire story.

The film follows Simon, a twelve-year-old boy who gets by through petty theft at the ski resort located above his town. Taking advantage of the influx of wealthy tourists, the boy steals sports equipment that he then sells in the valley, making this activity his primary means of subsistence. From the outset, the film thus establishes a character who moves naturally in an adult environment, developing survival strategies that reveal both his intelligence and the precariousness of his situation.

The central relationship in the story is between Simon and Louise (Léa Seydoux), a young woman who introduces herself as his older sister. However, the bond between them is marked by a deeply unstable dynamic, in which family roles appear blurred. Louise is unpredictable, sometimes absent and at other times dependent, forcing Simon to take on responsibilities that are not appropriate for his age. This imbalance makes the relationship the emotional core of the film, painting a portrait of mutual dependence where affection coexists with neglect.

One of the most striking aspects of ‘Sister’ is its portrayal of childhood. Far from an idealized vision, Simon comes across as a character who has grown up too fast (forced to fend for himself in a hostile environment without a stable support system). His behavior stems not only from a lack of resources, but also from the need to exert control over a reality that overwhelms him. In that sense, the film explores childhood as a realm of forced adaptation, where the possibility of choice is replaced by the urgency of survival.
