League of Legends: Everything you need to know about the new ranked changes

Riot Games has revealed some huge changes coming to how ranked games will work in League of Legends from the next season onwards. Here’s everything you need to know.

League of Legends: Everything you need to know about the new ranked changes

League of Legends’ Ranked gameplay is about to get some huge changes before the start of the 2024 season, and the devs behind this update are claiming it’s a great opportunity for improvement. According to Riot Brightmoon and Riot Meddler, players will now go through three ranked resets per season, meaning there will now be three ranked splits throughout the entire season, instead of the current two.

This news was revealed by Riot Games themselves through a vlog posted on their official YouTube channel, which you can find embedded below. In it, the two devs tasked with explaining the changes explained the reason for this massive difference to the way ranked will work now. “One long gradual climb over 10 months can feel like a real grind with a long gap until the fresh climb,” said Riot Meddler. “There’s that down period at the end of the year where, often, a lot of people will want to play Ranked and can’t. And sometimes, it’s just a long time until we’ve got the next window for larger changes to Summoners’ Rift gameplay.”

Every Split will therefore have its own rewards and Victorious skins at the end, as was the case with full seasons in the past. What this means is that starting in 2024, players will have even more rewards waiting for them, incentivizing ranked play for each of the splits to come.

What are all the changes coming to League of Legends ranked play?

Before we get into the details, it’s important to remember one very specific point that was confirmed by the devs: all of the gameplay changes that were announced that would typically come during the Preseason in November will instead launch on January 9, 2024 through patch 14.1.

So what can we expect? As of this moment, Riot Games has not gone to deep into revealing what changes will come to the game when the patch day date mentioned before arrives. But we know that one of the main objectives is to completely change Mythic items in the game. These types of items have directed the meta for the past two years, leading build paths and adding additional, exclusive bonuses to Legendary items while establishing a rigid tier system of items that forced players into falling in line or getting obliterated.

In 2024, the Mythic item system is going away completely. Players can also expect terrain adjustments on Summoner’s Rift, as well as objective changes and alterations to the map itself. Take a look at the devlog below to find out.
