LG UltraGear 45: The monitor that wants to retire your Smart TV

LG’s new offering combines a high-performance curved OLED panel with the smart features of a Smart TV to dominate your desktop.

As spaces in the home become more multifunctional, technology seeks to adapt to offer “all-in-one” solutions. LG seems to have figured out this need with the LG UltraGear 45 monitor I’ve been using for two months. This is no ordinary office monitor; it’s a 45-inch beast with OLED technology that not only promises to take gaming to the next level, but also integrates the webOS operating system, allowing it to function independently as a high-end smart TV.

What makes this monitor different from others?

The main innovation of this device is its “double life.” On the one hand, it is an ultra-high-performance gaming monitor with an 800R curvature that embraces the field of view, ideal for total immersion. On the other hand, thanks to the inclusion of webOS, you can access applications such as Netflix, Disney+, or YouTube without having to turn on your computer.

This feature is ideal for those who live in small spaces or are looking for energy efficiency. It is no longer necessary to have the PC turned on just to watch a series before bed; the monitor does everything by itself, managing content intelligently and smoothly.

How does it improve the visual and gaming experience?

At the heart of the LG UltraGear 45 is an OLED panel with a resolution of 3440 x 1440 pixels. The advantage of this technology is perfect blacks and vibrant colors that make any content stand out. However, for us as enthusiasts or early adopters, it’s the technical details that make the difference:

  • Extreme fluidity: It has a refresh rate of 240Hz, which means that the image is updated 240 times per second, eliminating any trace of blurring.
  • Instant response: Its 0.03ms response time ensures that every click is reflected on the screen without delay, a competitive advantage in action games.
  • Brightness and contrast: With an average brightness exceeding 500 nits, dark scenes gain detail and intense lights come to life without washing out the color.
  • Connectivity: Includes a remote control similar to that of the brand’s televisions, making it easy to navigate between game menus and streaming applications.

Is it worth it?

It is currently available in the United States at a price of $1,699.99, making it a luxury item for enthusiasts. However, it is important to note that if you have a graphics card such as the GeForce RTX 4090 or 5090, this monitor is the only one that can push AAA game graphics to the limit at high resolutions and frame rates. In fact, it could be said that it is ready for future top-of-the-line GPUs, as even the most powerful ones currently available fall short of being able to take full advantage of its potential. However, you will be getting a professional monitor, a home theater screen, and a cloud gaming console (via integrated apps such as GeForce Now or Xbox) in one package.

It is important to note that not everything is perfect—the built-in speakers are adequate, but lack the power of a smart TV or soundbar—although the versatility it offers is hard to match. It is a piece designed for those who do not want to sacrifice visual quality due to lack of space, offering the best of both worlds: work and entertainment.
