Margot Robbie speaks out about her future as Harley Quinn in the new DC Universe

It seems like we’ve reached the end of an era, as Margot Robbie revealed what her plans are regarding her iconic role of Harley Quinn in James Gunn’s new DC Universe.

One of the characters that we believed to be inseparable from their interpreter in the DC universe was Harley Quinn, already deeply associated with Margot Robbie, who triumphed this year in a big way with ‘Barbie’. However, in ‘Joker: Folie a Deux it’ll be Lady Gaga who puts herself in the shoes of Joaquin Phoenix’s partner, not closing the doors to Robbie abandoning the character... but neither for Gaga to continue with it once James Gunn has taken the reins of DC.

Robbie has played Harley Quinn in both versions of ’Suicide Squad’, the 2016 one and the 2021 reboot, as well as in ’Birds of Prey’, and even though both critics and the public liked her performance, it is not confirmed that the actress will continue in Gunn’s new DC Universe, as Viola Davies and John Cena, among others, will do.

Will Robbie continue to be Harley Quinn with James Gunn at the helm?

Robbie does not rule out continuing but also believes that it would be positive for the character to be played by different actresses.

I always wanted Harley to be a character that would get passed on to other actresses to play, the way there are so many iconic male characters. That was always the dream for her,” said the actress to Variety. “Harley’s so fun and can go in so many different directions. You put her in someone else’s hands, and it’s like, “What are they going to do with her?” The options are endless.”

One of those directions is that of a romance with Poison Ivy, something that has been seen in the comics, and which Robbie says she has pushed for for years now. However, we will still have to wait a while to discover if Margot Robbie will continue playing Harley Quinn, since for now, James Gunn’s DC Universe will start in the summer of 2025 with the premiere of ‘Superman Legacy’.
