Martin Scorsese's reaction to becoming the most nominated living director in Oscar history

A joy and honor for the great New York filmmaker, who is also saddened by the absence of Leonardo DiCaprio.

Update:
Martin Scorsese

Martin Scorsese is one of the most important directors in the history of cinema, a figure who has accompanied us for decades with outstanding works and who is still at the helm in the middle of 2024. A good example of this is that he has been nominated again for Best Director for ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, which is the 10th time in his career that he has been nominated, surpassing Steven Spielberg with whom he was tied with 9 nominations. Who is the most nominated director in Academy Award history? It is William Wyler with no less than 12 nominations, with such important works as ‘Ben-Hur’.

During his appearance on ’The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’, Scorsese talked about what this nomination means: “For this particular film too, it’s so exciting. But more than that, because the picture means so much to me, and it took a number of years for gestation. I mean, you look back. Ten nominations over the years. I honestly don’t know how that happened. I don’t know, because you never make films for awards. You make the film the best way you can make them.”

Scorsese’s feelings on his historic 10th Oscar nomination

Leonardo DiCaprio is, along with Robert De Niro, the actor Scorsese has counted on the most throughout his career, and he has not forgotten all those who worked on ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’: “I’m very pleased that so many people have been nominated for the film, including Robbie Robertson, his wonderful score and the song they have in the film. This is something very special. Lily Gladstone, of course. Amazing. And Bob de Niro too. I’m sad about Leo. I would’ve liked to have seen him in there as Best Actor, but his presence is there; it’s pivotal to the picture and the work..”

To talk about Scorsese is to talk about cinema, and “Killers of the Flower Moon” is his 10th nomination, a path that has included  ‘Raging Bull’, ‘The Last Temptation of Christ’, ‘Goodfellas’, ‘Gangs of New York’, ‘The Aviator’, ‘The Departed’, ‘The Infiltrator’, ‘Hugo’, ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ and ‘The Irishman’.
