‘Miami Vice’ new movie has a title, adds Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler, and is set to make a big splash in IMAX
The long-rumored project moves forward with Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler eyed as leads

Universal has confimerd that it will once again bring back the 1980s vibe of Miami with a new reboot of ‘Miami Vice’. The film, now titled ‘Miami Vice ’85’, is set to be released in the summer of 2027 under the direction of Joseph Kosinski, who recently made a name for himself directing ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ and ‘F1’.
Alongside Kosinski, the film’s lead actors were also revealed—they’ll be bringing the iconic detectives and their penchant for pastel colors to the big screen. First up is recent Academy Award winner Michael B. Jordan, who will play Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, and alongside him is Oscar nominee Austin Butler, who will portray James “Sonny” Crockett.
This isn’t the first time there’s been an attempt to reboot the franchise; Miami Vice was made into a movie in 2006, starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell and directed by Michael Mann.
What will ‘Miami Vice ’85’ be about?
Although no further details about the plot have been released, it was revealed that the film will explore “the glamour and corruption of mid-80s Miami” in a version inspired by the “pilot episode and first season” of the original series starring Philip Michael Thomas and Don Johnson, which followed two undercover Miami police officers from 1984 to 1990.
Rumors about the development of this film had been circulating for several years, during which time Kosinski had mentioned that “I’d be very lucky” if he could cast Jordan and Butler as the lead actors. ‘Miami Vice ’85’ is produced by Dylan Clark and Kosinski, with Dan Gilroy having written the screenplay. Filming will begin later this year and will be shot in IMAX.
