Michael Mann confirmed ‘Heat 2’, wants Adam Driver as the new Robert De Niro

The next Michael Mann movie after ‘Ferrari’ will be ‘Heat 2′, a prequel and sequel to the original film, in which the director wants Adam Driver as the main star.

Update:
Heat 2

Deadline has just confirmed what was an open secret: Michael Mann’s next film is ‘Heat 2′. During the promotion of ‘Ferrari’, his new film about the Cavallino Ramparte team and Enzo’s marriage (played by Adam Driver and Penelope Cruz), the director has been asked about ‘Heat 2′ and has assured plans to shoot it next.

What he has not confirmed yet, although his name is taken for granted in all bets, is that Adam Driver will be the protagonist. Of course, he was more than optimistic about it: “Adam and I got along like a house on fire [on Ferrari]. We have the same work ethic – which is pretty intense. We like each other, and we had a great time working together artistically.”

If it happens, Adam Driver would play the younger version of Neil McCauley (that is, Robert De Niro’s character) and it would be Michael Mann’s key to resurrecting with dignity one of the best action movies in history (the 7.5 rating in FilmAffinity speaks for itself).

‘Heat 2′ would be based on a novel of the same name that Michael Mann and Meg Gardiner themselves wrote at the end of last year. Already a bestseller, the book serves as a prequel and sequel at the same time and its synopsis reads like this:

“One day after the end of Heat, Chris Shiherlis (Val Kilmer) is holed up in Koreatown, wounded, half delirious, and desperately trying to escape LA. Hunting him is LAPD detective Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino). Hours earlier, Hanna killed Shiherlis’s brother in arms Neil McCauley (De Niro) in a gunfight under the strobe lights at the foot of an LAX runway. Now Hanna’s determined to capture or kill Shiherlis, the last survivor of McCauley’s crew, before he ghosts out of the city.”

What would ‘Heat 2′ be about?

The novel (and therefore we assume the movie) jumps between 1988, 1995, 1996, and the year 2000. “In 1988, seven years earlier, McCauley, Shiherlis, and their highline crew are taking scores on the West Coast, the US-Mexican border, and now in Chicago. Driven, daring, they’re pulling in money and living vivid lives. And Chicago homicide detective Vincent Hanna’a man unreconciled with his history-is following his calling, the pursuit of armed and dangerous men into the dark and wild places, hunting an ultraviolent gang of home invaders. Meanwhile, the fallout from McCauley’s scores and Hanna’s pursuit cause unexpected repercussions in a parallel narrative, driving through the years following Heat.”
