Millions of Windows 10 users face a looming security nightmare in October

Microsoft will end security updates for Windows 10, leaving over 750 million devices exposed to cyber threats.

Windows 10

The countdown has begun: on October 14, 2025, Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10, cutting off all security updates, bug fixes, and technical assistance. While the operating system will still function, users who don’t upgrade will be left vulnerable to malware, ransomware, and other cyberattacks.

Why this matters: 750 million users still on Windows 10

Despite repeated warnings, over 750 million users—more than half of the global Windows user base—are still running Windows 10. Many are unaware that this will soon become a major security risk. Experts are urging users to upgrade to Windows 11 or consider an alternative OS if their hardware isn’t compatible.

“We strongly recommend users don’t wait until October. Upgrade now or switch to a supported system,” cybersecurity analysts warn.

What happens after October 14?

  • No more security updates: Your PC will be exposed to new vulnerabilities.
  • No technical support: Microsoft will no longer assist with Windows 10 issues.
  • No feature updates: Apps and drivers may stop working over time.
  • Microsoft 365 apps will also lose support on Windows 10.

What are your options?

  1. Upgrade to Windows 11 (free if your PC meets the requirements).
    1. Use Microsoft’s PC Health Check tool to see if your device qualifies.
  2. Buy a new PC with Windows 11 pre-installed.
  3. Pay for Extended Security Updates (ESU) — $30 for one year of critical patches.
  4. Switch to an alternative OS, like Linux Mint or ChromeOS Flex, for older hardware.

What if your PC isn’t compatible?

Microsoft allows unofficial installations of Windows 11 on unsupported hardware, but warns that these systems won’t receive future updates. This could lead to performance issues or security gaps down the line.
