‘Minions & Monsters,’ a franchise low: $61 million in box office receipts during its first five days in theaters
Despite its box office failure, it has ranked number one at the box office.

Major studios have earned this reputation by creating extremely successful franchises. Universal is one of those studios that has been a giant in the industry for decades and decades. If you were to make a list of the best movies in history, it’s likely that at least one from this studio would make the cut. Over the past decade, it has struck gold in animation with a franchise whose name has brought in huge profits. In 2010, ‘Despicable Me’ was released, a film that was a hit. Despite its modest box office take of $540 million—compared to later films—it laid the groundwork for what would come years later. Such was the impact of those yellow characters in the film that they even got their own movies. All of them were box office hits, with the exception of the most recent one to be released.
Taking advantage of the unique nature of this past weekend in the United States—with the Fourth of July celebrations—Universal released ‘Minions & Monsters’ last Wednesday in an effort to extend its run in theaters. However, the latest box office figures indicate a historic flop. According to Box Office Mojo, the film has grossed $61 million domestically. With $36 million in its opening weekend, the film has become the lowest-grossing installment in the franchise during this time period.

The dismal record that Universal set with this installment could only be masked by its global box office receipts. Released in 71 markets, the film has grossed $98 million, placing it at number nineteen on the list of the highest-grossing films of 2026, with a total of $159 million.
