Mistborn movie reaches major milestone as Brandon Sanderson finishes the screenplay’s first draft

Brandon Sanderson has reached an important milestone in the development of the long-awaited ‘Mistborn’ film adaptation. The fantasy author announced on X that he has completed the first draft of the screenplay, meeting the timeline he previously shared with fans and coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the publication of ‘Mistborn: The Final Empire.’

“After many months of work, I’m thrilled to announce the first draft of the Mistborn screenplay is DONE!,” Sanderson wrote. “Just in time to celebrate the book’s original publication, twenty years ago this month. Do please remember that this is just an early step in a very long process, but I’m terribly excited by how it turned out!”

The screenplay represents the first major step in Apple’s planned adaptation of the Cosmere, following the company’s agreement with Sanderson announced earlier this year. The author has previously confirmed that he is closely involved in the project and retains significant creative oversight.

Mistborn Is Planned as the Foundation of the Cosmere

Originally published in 2006, Mistborn: The Final Empire launched Sanderson’s first major fantasy trilogy and introduced readers to the Cosmere, the interconnected universe that spans many of his novels.

Set in a world ruled by the immortal Lord Ruler, the story follows Vin, a young thief who discovers she possesses powerful Allomantic abilities, a magic system based on ingesting and “burning” various metals to gain supernatural abilities. She joins a crew led by the charismatic rebel Kelsier in an effort to overthrow the empire, while gradually uncovering the larger forces shaping the world. The mythology introduced in Mistborn eventually connects to other Cosmere series, including ‘The Stormlight Archive.’

Apple is reportedly developing Mistborn as a feature film, while ‘The Stormlight Archive’ is expected to receive a television adaptation. The latter project is believed to depend on the success of the Mistborn movie.
