Miyamoto teases a new Super Mario game in future Nintendo Directs
After the upcoming release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Shigeru Miyamoto himself has gone out of the way to suggest watching upcoming Nintendo Directs for a new game.
Miyamoto just dropped a bomb! Or rather, Bob-Omb. During an interview on the occasion of the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the designer was asked about when can we expect a new game in the franchise, and very attentive to a response, a nervous giggle in between, everything indicates that Nintendo has an ace up its sleeve and that we will have news on the subject sooner rather than later.
“Now that we have the movie and Super Nintendo World amusement park, when can we expect a new Mario game?” Variety asked. “Well, all I can say is please stay tuned for future Nintendo Directs”, Miyamoto replied while smiling and throwing a complicit look off camera.
6 years without a main Mario installment
Although after Super Mario Odyssey (in 2017) we got Super Mario Maker 2 (2019) and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury (2021), the truth is that the latter is a spin-off and a port of a Wii U game released in 2013 (with a DLC as an exception, true). That means we have not had a main release from the plumber for over five years and at least every two there is news about it. Could it be that Nintendo is waiting for the release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom to present what would be its big bombshell by the end of the year? Will the next few months of Switch be as impressive as those of its first months of life, when it brought together Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey in the same year?
Although it is impossible not to get excited and mark every Nintendo Direct date with red from now on, the truth is that the platform, always mired in rumors about its successor, has an exciting future ahead. A future full of great games like the following:
