Mystery of the fish christened ‘Black Devil Fish’ revealed

A famous Italian photographer exposes the ‘great deception’ of the viral video of this underwater find.

Scientists and marine enthusiasts alike have been intrigued by a rare find in the waters off Tenerife. Recently, a diver managed to film a very rare specimen of ‘Melanocetus johnsonii’, an abyssal fish popularly known as the ‘black devil fish’, in the waters surrounding the Canary Island. The appearance of this strange predator of the deep caused a sensation in the press and on social networks. However, one important detail went unnoticed by most: the video was posted upside down without anyone noticing.

The photographer and marine explorer Alberto Luca Recchi was the one who warned about the mistake after seeing the photo on social networks and on a well-known news platform. As explained by the Italian media RaiNews, Recchi addressed the issue by commenting that this oversight shows the great ignorance that exists about marine fauna, since such a mistake would never go unnoticed in a terrestrial animal, such as a zebra or a bird.

To support his argument, the expert told an anecdote in which, after a dive with professional divers and a biologist, he invented the names of non-existent creatures, such as the “granchio tigre di sabbia” or the “pesce melone”, without any of them realizing that these species do not exist. The “black devil fish”, despite its frightening appearance, is a fascinating fish that lives in the depths of the ocean where the light does not reach. Its dark body and bioluminescence make it a true ghost of the abyss. In addition to highlighting the rarity of the find, this case has reopened a debate about how much we still need to know about the mysteries of the ocean.
