Neither comfort nor tradition, James Gunn explains why his Superman wears trunks on the outside

The film will be released next July.

There is a version of Kal-El for every director, author or cartoonist, and one of the most controversial was that of Zack Snyder, played by Henry Cavill. Not only was it because of his character so dark, far from the absolute being of light that the superhero really is, but also because the always controversial director rejected the Trunks on the outside. However, James Gunn has returned to bet on this garment in ‘Superman’.

DC Comics itself already dispensed with them in the Superman of The New 52 stage. Gunn revealed in a conversation with David Corenswet that, having spoken with Snyder before, he was also about to eliminate the red Trunks, but the director reveals why he finally decided to include them in the final version of the suit.

Why Gunn decided on trunks for ‘Superman’

“One of the biggest questions was, were we going to have trunks, or were we going to not have trunks? I talked to Zack Snyder, who was like, ‘You know, I tried a billion different versions with the trunks, and I couldn’t get there.’” Gunn begins. “And I was feeling exactly the same way. I went in with David — he tried it not trunks, and he tried it trunks — and I was still going to go with not trunks. Theoretically, I liked the idea of trunks because it’s, you know, the Superman I grew up with.”

“The problem is that they look a little ridiculous. You were looking for a way to make them look cool or with a function and an explanation,“ Corenswet says. ”My thing was, maybe they’re supposed to look a little silly. Maybe the reason he wears them is to look a little silly. Basically to undermine how powerful he really is.”

An idea, that of the actor who plays the Man of Steel, shared by Gunn. “In this version of the DCU, everyone knows he’s an alien. He shoots beams out of his eyes. He can blow things down with his breath. He’s sort of this terrifying creature,” says the director. “But he really liked kids and human beings and people. He wants kids not to be afraid of him. And that was the thing that made me decide to keep the trunks.”

‘Superman’ opens next July 11.
