Anime

Neither ‘One Piece’ nor ‘Kimetsu no Yaiba’: this is the most watched anime on Netflix in 2024

Despite the strength of new series, the classics never die.

One Piece

Netflix is no slouch when it comes to anime, whether it’s licensing classics, helping to produce new material, or acquiring the rights to the hottest names of the moment. The platform usually has its finger on the pulse of what’s most popular (and also often uses that pulse to target its productions with real actors, a little seam that the platform seems to be capitalizing on well). Having already passed 2024, we have a ranking (in hours viewed) that allows us to check the current map of fan tastes, with a clear winner: the incombustible ‘Naruto’, which prevails with 330 million hours viewed.

Second place goes to another Big Three classic: ‘One Piece’, which is a close second with 316 million views. Far behind in third place is ‘Demon Slayer’ (‘Kimetsu no Yaiba’) with 208 million hours viewed. At this point, it should also be noted that the “hours viewed” scale clearly favors series with more episodes, which the Deans have plenty of between their long main and filler arcs. The fifty-five episodes of “Kimetsu no Yaiba” are not the same as the more than 700 of “Naruto” or the more than 1000 of “One Piece” (and it is perhaps more impressive that the former accumulates the hours it has accumulated in relation to the difference in the number of episodes with the first two).

Also striking from the list is the fourth place for ‘Pokémon’, which demonstrates the multimedia power of the Nintendo series and its constant presence in the collective imagination. It is followed by things like ‘Black Clover’, ‘Hunter x Hunter’ (which should be much higher in a better world) or ‘The Seven Deadly Sins’. The list also features two firsts compared to previous lists, with ‘Dandadan’ and ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’ making their first appearances on this type of list on the popular video-on-demand platform.

A good prologue for the live-action ‘Naruto’

The fact that ‘Naruto’ maintains its popularity is great news in view of the new live-action that Netflix Studios is preparing on Kishimoto’s work in the form of a movie, which the mangaka himself is looking forward to according to his statements last year. He expressed his admiration for the choice of director, Destin Daniel Cretton, who successfully directed “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” and is considered someone who understands both the action part and the emotional background of the characters and their circumstances.

The full list is as follows (in millions of hours viewed)

  1. Naruto 330m
  2. One Piece 316m
  3. Demon Slayer 208m
  4. Pokémon 170m
  5. Black Clover 138m
  6. Hunter x Hunter 138m
  7. The Seven Deadly Sins 128m
  8. My Hero Academia 127m
  9. Dandadan 97m
  10. Jujutsu Kaisen 87m
