Netflix has released the trailer for the animated series ‘Onimusha’, the anime adaptation of the Capcom saga. Directed by legendary Japanese filmmaker Takashi Miike, the new series follows the adventures of legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi during the Sengoku Era, one of Japan’s most turbulent and violent periods.
Netflix releases first trailer for ‘Onimusha’, the anime based on Capcom’s video game
In this first trailer, we can appreciate some general hints about the plot of the Onimusha anime on Netflix. Swordsman Miyamoto Musashi is given a mission to complete within a strict deadline of thirty-three days. Along the way, he encounters not only thugs, ninjas, and rival samurai, but also supernatural threats such as the Genma, demons born of chaos itself and conceived by the demon god Fortinbras. Although Fortinbras is not mentioned in the trailer, the Genma are the main antagonists in Capcom’s video game saga.
What is mentioned is the Oni Gauntlet, used to seal the souls of the Genma and used by Samanosuke, the protagonist of the first three Onimusha. The first title, Onimusha: Warlords had a remaster in 2019. Miyamoto Musashi himself was a controllable character in Onimusha: Blade Warriors (2003), a spin-off of the saga.
From the trailer, we can see that this new animated series boasts solid CGI and quality animation. We will have to wait until its premiere, when all the chapters will be available, to see if it is a worthy adaptation of the original source. However, our first impressions are quite positive. The studio in charge of this project is Sublimation, who already brought another anime adaptation of a Capcom video game series to Netflix: ‘Dragon’s Dogma’ (2020).
When will the Onimusha anime premiere on Netflix?
The Onimusha anime series on Netflix will premiere worldwide on Thursday, November 2, 2023. This is an original and exclusive anime for Netflix, so you won’t be able to watch it on any other platform.
