Nintendo introduces tiered game pricing on Nintendo Switch 2, separating digital and physical costs

Digital releases will be cheaper than boxed copies, reflecting production costs and broader industry trends.

Update:

Nintendo announced a significant shift in how it prices its first-party titles for the Nintendo Switch 2. Moving forward, the company will implement a tiered pricing model that distinguishes between digital downloads and physical retail copies. This new strategy will debut this May with the release of Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, marking the first time the company has moved away from the traditional parity between formats on its latest hardware.

In an official statement through their support site, Nintendo explained this change. “Beginning in May 2026, and starting with preorders for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, new Nintendo published digital titles exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2 will have an MSRP that is different from physical versions,” the company’s announcement reads. “Nintendo games offer the same experiences whether in packaged or digital format, and this change simply reflects the different costs associated with producing and distributing each format and offers players more choice in how they can buy and play Nintendo games.”

Adapting to modern distribution costs

The digital version of Yoshi’s newest adventure will be priced at $59.99, while the physical cartridge will retail for $69.99. This $10 difference represents a departure from the launch pricing of previous Switch 2 hits like Metroid Prime 4 and Donkey Kong Bananza, which maintained the same price regardless of how the users chose to purchase them.

Analysts recently speculated that Nintendo might also need to adjust the price of the Switch 2 console itself later this year, following similar trends seen with PlayStation and Xbox. Offering a digital discount, might be a way to balance these macroeconomic pressures while still giving fans a choice in how they build their library.
