Leaks related to Nintendo’s next-generation console are starting to constantly appear at the forefront of the industry. According to multiple sources (and reported by VGC) it is likely that a “Nintendo Switch 2″ will hit the market in the second half of 2024. The Japanese company intends to avoid supply issues suffered by both PS5 and Xbox Series X/S since its release.

Little is known about the technical features of the console, although the same sources indicate that the new machine will respect the portable concept of Nintendo Switch. Two of them suggest that the device will use an LCD screen and not an OLED, since the intention is to reduce costs to prioritize greater internal storage. Like the current console, the successor to Switch will not do without the physical cartridge format, so it will have a slot for cartridges.

One of the characteristics that is still unknown is if the future console will be backward compatible with Nintendo Switch games. At the moment, the Japanese company has not officially referred to its new generation platform, but the sources have not clarified whether it will be implemented or not. Nintendo has limited itself to ensuring that making it possible is “easier than ever”.

The reason why Nintendo Switch 2 is feasible in 2024

Consulted by VGC, Tokyo-based analyst Dr. Serkan Toto has agreed that the launch of a new console is feasible: “I would generally say that looking at Nintendo’s financials, it seems clear that it’s time for a new piece of hardware in 2024.” As he explains, hardware sales are expected to fall by 16.5% compared to the previous year. “The only way to stop these losses from totally ballooning next fiscal is a new device, and the second half of 2024 sounds like a realistic release window to me.”

The Nintendo Switch went on sale on March 3, 2017. Since then, the console has become a complete success for the company, which has already sold more than 125 million devices.
