Nintendo Switch 2 plan leaked ahead of Direct: launch month and game strategy

Developers at GDC reveal the plan Nintendo will follow with Nintendo Switch 2.

Nintendo Switch 2. That’s about it. Why say more? This proper name sums up a first half of 2025 in which Nintendo’s console has been the complete protagonist of the video game news. Its Direct on April 2 will finally reveal what the company is preparing, but numerous personalities at the GDC (Game Developers Conference, the most important fair at the development level) have shared the plans that the company will take with the strategy that the console will follow once it enters the market.

This is the launch month of Nintendo Switch 2, and this is how we will see its games arrive

First, the important thing: Nintendo Switch 2 will be launched in June. In the absence of knowing the exact day, sources handled by the portal Insider Gaming (with Tom Henderson at the head, reliable leaker of the medium) reveal that this is the month chosen for the console to land on the market.

Now come the games: Nintendo will follow a strategy divided into three phases. The first, which will be the launch phase, will focus on first-party titles, which are games developed internally by their teams. They are the ones who have had access to the development kits from the beginning, so they have the background to meet the deadlines that will accompany the console from its debut. The new Mario Kart is sure to be one of them.

The second phase, expected between October and November, will focus on third-party studios. The portal’s information suggests that most companies still do not have access to the Switch 2 dev kit, which they expect to receive in June. It makes sense because of the lack of leaks of this internal use model. It has passed through very few hands, and those who have worked on it are absolutely silent. Our take? We believe that there are some third parties involved in the launch catalog, but carefully chosen.

The third (and final) phase corresponds to the Holidays campaign. Nintendo is preparing a significant investment to make the first Holidays of Nintendo Switch 2 strong, suggesting the launch of a major title (or several) from its licensing portfolio. We already saw this with its predecessor in 2017. October saw the launch of Super Mario Odyssey, the big 3D Mario after Super Mario 3D World, and December saw Xenoblade Chronicles 2 follow suit.
