Nintendo takes its stance on the use of AI-generative, acknowledging its advantages and risks

The debate over the use of generative artificial intelligence continues. Although its use has been present in some video games in recent years, its appearance has caused problems in an environment where creativity is also fundamental. This battle of opinions has reached Nintendo’s doorstep, and the company has made its position on the matter known.

Nintendo acknowledge Generative AI, yet knows its issues

During a recent Q&A session with shareholders, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa was asked about the company’s initiatives related to artificial intelligence as it “will become more prominent in everyday life”. Furukawa acknowledged that AI has a very close relationship with video game development, citing “to control the movements of opponent characters” as an example.

“In the game industry, AI-like technologies have long been used — for example, to control the movements of opponent characters — so I believe that game development and AI technology have always had a close relationship,” began the executive.

The most important issue, however, is Generative AI, which has gained momentum. Furukawa acknowledges the importance of this technology, but also the “intellectual property issues” it may bring. As for whether Nintendo will use it for games, the executive acknowledges the “decades of know-how” the company has in creating gaming experiences.

“Generative AI, which is becoming a big topic recently, can be used in creative ways, but we recognize that it may also raise issues with intellectual property rights,” said Furukawa. “We have decades of know-how in creating the best gaming experiences for our players. While we are open to utilizing technological developments, we will work to continue delivering value that is unique to Nintendo and cannot be created by technology alone.”
