Nintendo’s next animated film already has a release date, though it’s not yet clear what it will be about
Super Mario, Donkey Kong, Star Fox, or perhaps something else?
The partnership between Nintendo and Universal continues. Following the success of ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ and ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’, a new film from Illumination is already in the works—or at least it has a release date.
A release schedule from Universal Pictures Spain has revealed that Nintendo and Illumination have an upcoming project, though its nature remains unknown at this time. For now, it is listed as a placeholder titled “Untitled Illumination/Nintendo Event Film,” which is scheduled for release on April 12, 2028.
It’s no surprise that Nintendo is moving forward with an animated film. Despite what the critics have said, both Super Mario movies have been box office hits. For now, it remains to be seen what this project will entail. On one hand, there have been rumors of a Donkey Kong spin-off featuring the voice of Seth Rogen, while it could also be a new Super Mario installment following the post-credits scenes at the end of the movie. And while there may still be time, fans of the latest movie have also been asking for a spin-off based on one of the most significant cameos in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie: Star Fox.

However, Nintendo hasn’t limited its video game adaptations to animated films. It was recently announced that filming for the live-action ‘The Legend of Zelda’ movie had wrapped up in New Zealand. The film stars Bo Bragason as the titular Princess Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link. The film is scheduled to premiere on May 7, 2027, bridging the gap with the other animated film, and who knows, perhaps paving the way for an annual Nintendo movie strategy.
