No, ‘The Wheel of Time’ cancellation was not due to poor ratings
Showrunner Rafe Judkins doesn’t know why it was canceled.
Amazon has decided to cancel ‘The Wheel of Time’. The fantasy series, which is based on Robert Jordan’s novels, will not continue beyond season three unless it finds a new home on another streaming platform. Although Amazon has not shared the reasons that led to this decision, showrunner Rafe Judkins has confirmed that audience numbers were not a factor, although he does not know the exact reasons. He did, however, share that the team is “devastated” by the decision.
“I’ve been asked the same question many times the last week - why was ‘The Wheel of Time’ canceled?” he said in a statement posted on Instagram. “And the truth is, I don’t know.” The showrunner has noted that he wishes he could explain it clearly, but he can’t.
Showrunner boasts audience
“What I can say is that the actors and crew on our show are the most talented and wonderful group of people I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with. And we’ve iall been incredibly lucky to make something that not only was beloved by fans (and even the critics! ha!), but was also watched by huge number of people all over the world.” Judkins recalled that it was in the Top 10 of the Nielsen list of most-watched series for nearly 20 weeks, which rules out the audience question.
In the statement, the showrunner is confident that another streaming platform will eventually pick up the baton, although he senses that getting it won’t be easy. “So, who knows, perhaps ‘The Wheel of Time’ show will do what the books have always managed to do since day one, - defy the traditional definitions of ‘beginnings’ and ‘endings’. I certainly hope it does -because this book series and these fans deserve to see the story finished,” he reflected.
