‘One Piece’ reveals Dracule Mihawk’s past, why he hates the Marines, and how he became a Warlord of the Sea

Oda is like that. You spend a thousand chapters waiting for a flashback of one of your favorite ‘One Piece’ characters and he drops his whole story in an Ask Me Anything. It happened with Zoro. The author revealed his family tree and showed that he didn’t like the swordsman in an attachment. The same thing happened with Dracule Mihawk (Hawk Eyes for friends).

Each manga hiatus (here is the date of the next chapter) is equivalent to a new SBS, an acronym for “Shitsumon o Boshuu Suru” (or what is equivalent to “I take questions”, an Ask Me Anything in which Eiichiro Oda answers the requests of his fans). One of the questions chosen for the occasion was this: “In chapter 1058 (of ‘One Piece’), Crocodile mentioned that Mihawk was called the ‘Marine Hunter’ in the past. Is it somehow related to the reason why Mihawk joined the Shichibukai (Seven Warlords of the Sea)?

Neither short nor lazy, the author has explained that yes, “Mihawk is a person who holds a grudge against the Marines in the past (like Zoro) and has experienced a great betrayal. In the sense of solitude, he’s just like Crocodile, who doesn’t trust people and there is a part of him getting tired of life. Being a member of the Shichibukai means he won’t be chased by the Marines, that way, he will have peace, so that’s why he became a member, I think. But now, that position has vanished, so the idea now is to hide behind Buggy’s shadow.”

Despite the unexpected amount of information about Mihawk’s past, the fact that Oda has not finished unraveling the mystery surrounding this “great betrayal” suggests that he has an ace up his sleeve for the fight against Zoro, one of the most anticipated reunions for fans of the series.
