One Piece: Whitebeard may have confirmed the biggest theory about Shanks and his family

This theory may completely change your perception of Shanks.

Barbablanca y Shanks

The creation of Japanese Mangaka Eiichirō Oda, known as One Piece, is still an absolute mystery even to its biggest fans more than 25 years after its publication. Since the first chapter in October ’99, we have been introduced to the legendary booty that gives the series its title, but after more than 1000 episodes, there are still no clear clues as to what it really is. At the same time, something very similar happens with Shanks, the enigmatic pirate who appeared in the first episode of the manga and about whom some details have been revealed over time, but we have not been able to discover what his true intentions are.

On the other hand, One Piece movies were traditionally not considered part of the canon, but in recent years this has changed, and in the movies we can find clues about unresolved issues. As an example, in 2019, One Piece: Stampede" confirmed that the last island, which until then had been known as Raftel, was actually called Laugh Tale. And three years later, in ‘One Piece Movie: Red", it was revealed that Shanks is a member of the Figarland family, one of the twenty founding dynasties of the World Government.

Does Whitebeard confirm the most shocking theory about Shanks and his family?

In the vast One Piece universe, few characters have maintained such an aura of mystery as Shanks. His role as one of the Yonko and his direct connection to Luffy position him as one of the indispensable characters in the story, but his encounter with the Five Elders in Mary Geoise sowed doubt among the most fanatical fans: is it possible that Shanks has a twin brother? And to make matters worse, could Whitebeard have hinted at this theory long before it gained momentum?

This theory is supported by the encounter between Shanks and Whitebeard in chapter 434. The captain of the Red-Headed Pirates warns Whitebeard about Blackbeard. In this conversation, Whitebeard mentions that every time he sees his face, he feels the pain of his scars, suggesting that whoever caused them had an identical appearance to Shanks.

While it is possible to argue that Figarland Garling was responsible for Barbablanca’s scars, the only time the two coincided according to the One Piece story was during the Valley of God incident. However, those scars appeared on Whitebeard much later. In other words, the most credible explanation is that Shanks' twin brother had a confrontation with Whitebeard. This would completely exonerate Shanks of any suspicion of evil that some fans have about him.
