Sega is not lagging behind in bringing its IPs to the big screen, with the recent announcement that OutRun is coming to the big screen.

According to reports from specialist media such as The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline, Universal Pictures is behind this adaptation. Michael Bay, known for his work on the Transformers saga and his action-packed directing style, is said to be in the running to direct and produce the film. In addition, Sydney Sweeney, who we have seen in productions such as Euphoria and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, is also attached to the project as a producer. Jayson Rothwell will write the script, although plot details and a possible release date are being kept under wraps for now. On the Sega side, Toru Nakahara, who worked on the Sonic movies, is a producer, and Sega America and Europe CEO Shuji Utsumi will oversee the film.

SEGA continues to bring their games to the big screen

This move by Sega is not entirely unexpected considering the success of the Sonic the Hedgehog movies. The good reception from audiences and critics has opened up an interesting path for the Japanese company in the world of cinema. Add to that the recent launch of the adaptation of Like a Dragon: Yakuza on Amazon, which demonstrates a clear strategy to explore this market. Hollywood’s interest in video games is also reflected in the box office success of films such as The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the anticipated Minecraft movie, suggesting that this trend could continue in the near future.

Sega released the original OutRun arcade game in 1986. The driving game tasks players with driving a car to beat a timer, trying to reach a finish line before time runs out. The game spawned a number of sequels and spin-offs, with the latest installment, OutRun Online Arcade, released in 2009. The series became influential for future racing and driving video games.
