Overwatch 2 will be the first Blizzard title on Steam

Blizzard has announced an alliance that will allow it to take its team-based shooter off its own platform, making Overwatch 2 available on Steam Deck.

Update:
Overwatch 2 will be the first Blizzard title on Steam

If there’s one thing that has defined Blizzard’s titles for more than two decades, it’s that if you want to play them on the PC, it’s through its Battle.net platform. That is about to change, as the California-based company plans to bring its titles to Steam, starting with Overwatch 2.

The world needs heroes, on other platforms

In a press release, Blizzard announced that starting August 10th, PC gamers will be able to play the team-based shooter through Steam, taking advantage of many of the features that the PC gaming platform has to offer. According to the company, the change is intended to “make it easier for players around the world to find and enjoy their games,” as well as provide another way for players to continue to enjoy the game and grow the game’s community.

“While Battle.net remains a priority for us now and into the future, we’ve heard players want the choice of Steam for a selection of our games,” said Mike Ybarra, president of Blizzard Entertainment.

This does not mean that Overwatch 2 will no longer be available on Battle.net. In fact, it will still be necessary to have an account on this platform to be able to link it already within the game on Steam, just as happened a few months ago when cross-play allowed to play between consoles and PC, as well as to keep in touch with friends regardless of which platform they were on.

“Gamers will have another platform where they can play a beloved game that utilizes the capabilities of Steam, and developers will benefit from the effects of having the talented team at Blizzard helping us evolve our supported features and functionality for Overwatch 2″, said Gabe Newell, president of Valve.

On the other hand, players who play on Steam will be able to use the platform’s own features when playing Overwatch 2, such as using Steam’s friends list to invite people to play and earning in-game achievements.

What other Blizzard games are coming to Steam?

For now, Blizzard does not mention which title (or titles) will be coming next, but it seems that this migration will finally allow us to carry these titles in other ways, such as the Steam Deck. For now, the Overwatch 2 page on Steam is already active.
