PlayStation 5 Disc Drive sold out in many stores after PS5 Pro announcement
Panic is spreading among PlayStation users who have sold out of the PS5 external disc drive in just one day since it was announced that the PS5 Pro will not include it as standard.
The official announcement of the PS5 Pro, the mid-generation revision of Sony’s machine, has been the most talked about news these days. Apart from its high price, one of its most criticized aspects was that it is a digital-only console that can be connected to an external disc drive. And because of this factor, the PS5 external disk drive sold out in just 48 hours after its announcement at various retailers such as the official PlayStation Store and Amazon.

Last Tuesday, September 10, 2024, took place the official presentation of PS5 Pro, a more powerful revision than the standard PS5. However, this new console does not include a disk drive as standard, necessary if we want to use games in physical format. Less than 48 hours after its announcement, Amazon sold out of the Disc Drive for PS5 consoles, compatible with the Slim model and PS5 Pro, when it went on sale during the next month of November. Its official retail price in the United States is $79.99.
While the disc drive appears to be back in stock at the official PlayStation Store in the US, other countries are not having the same luck.
In the absence of knowing if it is a general lack of stock, it is striking a depletion so close to the announcement of a new machine that can use this add-on. For this reason, we mix two main theories: that the PS5 Disc Drive compatible with PS5 Pro is out of stock may be due to either FOMO, or speculation. Let’s recap:
We believe that two main types of profiles would have rushed to buy one of the PS5 disc readers. On the one hand, there would be the user who, fearing a possible general sellout, would want to have a disc reader before the launch of the PS5 Pro to enjoy the performance and graphical improvements of the physical format titles they already own.
On the other hand, there is the profile of the speculator or reseller who wants to take advantage of the imminent release of the PS5 Pro to make a profit by buying many units of the console reader en masse to resell them at a much higher price and thus keep the difference. This is a risky maneuver because, as we said, there may not be a general lack of stock and it is more than likely that there will be a restocking of units that will ruin this strategy to get some extra income.
