PlayStation users will lose this digital content, even if they paid for it

The agreement with Discovery has ended, leaving PlayStation Store without hundreds of movies and shows that will disappear forever.

The eternal debate between physical and digital formats is back in the news after another controversial move. No, they haven’t removed any games from the PS Store, they haven’t ripped any titles from players’ digital libraries, but something similar will happen to certain video content from Discovery. Purchased or not, the licensing agreement has expired, so the platform will be getting rid of hundreds of movies and series, as confirmed by PlayStation itself.

“As of December 31, due to our content licensing arrangements with content providers, you you will no longer be able to watch any of your previously purchased Discovery content and the content will be removed from your video library,” read some of the tweets shared by users on social network X/Twitter. “We sincerely thank you for the continued support.”

Angry reactions on social networks

As expected, the reaction has not been long in coming. Many of the comments have expressed their discontent and questioned the future of digital content that could disappear from stores if the companies decide to do so. This is not a new concern: in fact, the closure of digital stores on older consoles has raised many concerns. Although games already purchased have not been removed, companies such as Nintendo always emphasize the words “for now” in their announcements.

“I’ve been telling people for ages that the only real ownership is physical. if you purchase something that then only exists on a platform you don’t own, it can be gone in an instant,” comented Danisha Carter, a user on the social media.

PlayStation has just announced The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered for PS5, which will be released on January 19. Those who own a copy of the original will be able to upgrade for $10.
