RAM prices skyrocketing: Samsung, Micron, and SK Hynix sued for alleged market manipulation

A lawsuit has been filed against Samsung, Micron, and SK Hynix for allegedly fixing RAM prices.

The high price of RAM has become one of the most talked-about topics in the consumer electronics sector in recent months, as it affects PCs, video game consoles, and cell phones alike. And take note, because this situation could end up in court: a class-action lawsuit filed in the United States accuses Samsung, Micron, and SK Hynix—the three largest manufacturers in the sector—of deliberately restricting supply to keep prices artificially high amid the boom in artificial intelligence. If proven, the case could become one of the biggest antitrust scandals in the hardware industry in recent years.

In recent years, the DRAM market has experienced sharp price fluctuations, but the latest surge has drawn particular attention because it coincides with the boom in artificial intelligence. The growing demand for chips for data centers and AI accelerators has led to a widespread increase in memory prices, affecting the cost of computers, smartphones, graphics cards, and even video game consoles that rely on this component.

However, the plaintiffs argue that there may be more to this situation than simply the law of supply and demand. As reported by Law360 (via VGC), a class-action lawsuit filed in a California federal court accuses Samsung, Micron, and SK Hynix of coordinating a deliberate reduction in the production and supply of DRAM memory to keep prices artificially high. According to the complaint, the companies allegedly used the artificial intelligence boom as a pretext to prioritize chips intended for that segment, restricting supply to other sectors and thereby violating U.S. antitrust laws.

At this time, these allegations have not been proven, and it will be up to the courts to determine whether or not there is coordinated conduct among the manufacturers. However, if the lawsuit is successful, the case could have significant repercussions for the technology industry: ranging from potential damages in the millions to increased regulatory scrutiny of a market in which a small number of companies account for the vast majority of global DRAM production.

On the other hand, this would not be the first time that memory manufacturers have faced accusations of this kind: in the early 2000s, several of the industry’s major players—including Samsung, Micron, and Hynix—were already penalized for participating in an international price-fixing cartel, an episode that resulted in multimillion-dollar fines and guilty pleas by some companies and executives.

For now, everything is in the hands of the courts, and the presumption of innocence remains fully in effect for the companies in question. Even so, the mere fact that a lawsuit of this magnitude has reached the courts once again puts the functioning of a market on which much of the global technology industry depends under the microscope. If the lawsuit succeeds, its impact could extend far beyond RAM manufacturers and affect the entire global hardware ecosystem.
