Red button to save yourself or blue button to save everyone: the deadly dilemma posed by MrBeast on his X account
MrBeast stirs the conscience of his followers with a hypothetical, deadly game on a global scale. Red button or blue button?

Despite what the headline of this article might suggest, there’s no need to worry: MrBeast hasn’t created a deadly game where the consequences of losing are truly catastrophic. What he has done is present an extreme version of the prisoner’s dilemma on his X account, which has sparked many interesting interpretations and reflections. The question is: will you press the blue button or the red button?
MrBeast’s deadly dilemma on X: one button saves everyone, and the other saves only you but kills those who don’t press it
On April 29, MrBeast posted an unusual message on his X account. It wasn’t the script or premise for one of his extreme videos, but rather a thought-provoking hypothetical scenario. The text read as follows: “Everyone on earth takes a private vote by pressing a red or blue button. If more than 50% of people press the blue button, everyone survives. If less than 50% of people press the blue button, only people who pressed the red button survive. Which button would you press? BE HONEST.

The vote lasted twenty-four hours and ended with a very close 56% for blue and 44% for red, which would mean that, in this iteration of the exercise, everyone on the planet would survive. However, many have drawn on sociology and game theory to explain why the red button is the optimal choice even though it may result in the deaths of thousands—or even millions—of other people.

Essentially, pressing the red button means that nothing bad will happen to you personally. What’s more, if all participants pressed the red button, absolutely no one would perish due to the perverse rules of the game in question. In other words, moral implications aside, the red button implies total and conscious control over the outcome on an individual level. On the other hand, pressing the blue button can be interpreted not only as self-sacrifice, but also as blind faith that more than half the world’s population shares your same selfless view of the world.

In any case, MrBeast’s post went viral, and in the comments we can see all sorts of arguments that showcase the incredible creativity of X users. Essentially, the debate could be boiled down to “the red button means I definitely won’t die, and the blue button means I might die,” but this introspective exercise has really struck a chord with the popular streamer’s audience. Who knows? Perhaps, given this massive reception, MrBeast will adapt the idea for one of his upcoming viral challenges. Of course, for obvious reasons, with rules ensuring that no one gets hurt in the process.
