Resident Evil Requiem aims to challenge more than your aim with the bosses

The ninth installment trades nonstop action for tension, strategy, and a heroine who learns to fight her fear.

Update:

The next Resident Evil title is much closer than we imagine. As the ninth installment in the franchise, Resident Evil Requiem seeks to bring back some elements from the original titles to challenge players, rather than simply being a barrage of gunfire against monsters.

In a recent interview with game director Koshi Nakanishi at Automaton, the creative revealed that he wants players to use their creativity more than their shooting skills when facing bosses. “Of course there will be boss battles,” Nakanishi said. “However, rather than defeating enemies in a flashy manner as you progress through the game, like in games that emphasise gun shooting action, the style is more like Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2, where players expand their exploration area in a closed space and overcome obstacles using their wits.”

The growth of the protagonist

In the same interview, Najanishi spoke a little more about Grace Ashcroft, the game’s protagonist. The director has mentioned in the past that the focus on horror in this title made past protagonists such as Leon Kennedy “a bad match,” but with Grace, there is the aspect that, as in previous games, we can see her initially being afraid, but growing over time.

“One thing that’s so appealing about the Resident Evil series is that characters who are initially terrified grow stronger as they gain experience in extreme situations,” Nakanishi said. “Grace is scared at first, but the situation eventually causes her to snap, and she becomes able to fight her enemies.”
