Rick & Morty Season 7: We watched the first episodes and the essence continues

Without spoilers, we tell you about the return of Rick & Morty in a new season that retains the essence of its characters and adventures.

Rick & Morty as a show is at a very delicate point. The departure of a co-creator is not a simple thing, especially when he is the voice of the main characters. When you think about other television products where the exit of creative minds is a major change, it is easy to understand that after the dismissal of co-creator Justin Roiland last year following allegations of abuse and violence, it was the loss of a very important piece. Ahead of the release of Rick & Morty Season 7, we had the opportunity to watch the first two episodes, which serve as a preview of what we can expect from the show at this point.

This review contains no spoilers for the first two episodes of Rick & Morty.

What can we expect from Rick & Morty Season 7?

The return of the season is an adventure centered around Mr. Poopybutthole, a fan-favorite character who, after being told his story in a few post-credits moments over the years, finally gets the attention he needs and shows us the strange place he’s at as a character. Also, this episode has a couple of cameos we never saw coming that provide a lot of jokes. The post credits scene, by the way, has a lot of comedic and nonsensical value.

The second episode focuses on Rick and Jerry working as a team to “pick up” Morty who has been captured by an interplanetary mobster. The way these two characters work together makes for a unique and fun relationship that continues Rick’s path of working on his relationships.

Overall, the episodes share a common theme of redemption. Something very strange for the series, but something we have seen in previous seasons. The development that the characters have had throughout the seasons continues and this is something that is appreciated, especially in the first episode where we also see many familiar faces back in the series.

Finally, there is the matter of the voices. If you’ve had a chance to watch the trailer for the season, you’ll notice that the voices are extremely similar. If you were in a coma with no access to information and the first thing you saw on TV was Rick & Morty, you wouldn’t notice a change. This is truly amazing work, even considering the amount of care taken not to reveal the voices behind these characters.

If the changes that have occurred with Rick & Morty made you think that the irreverence, the wacky elements, and the details that made the cartoon what it is, there is still a lot of that essence in the show. While his return doesn’t come with elements that blew our minds or extremely complicated storylines (think Mortyplicity, for example), it does maintain the dynamic we’ve seen in past seasons without giving continuity to certain story elements that have been floating around for years.

Rick & Morty Season 7 will premiere this October 15th on Adult Swim.
