Talking about Robert De Niro is talking about one of the greatest actors in history. The Italian-American has become a legend, with a unique and enviable career in cinema. From his first major leading role in ‘Mean Streets’, to his iconic performances in ‘Raging Bull’ and ‘Goodfellas’, and his latest prominent character in ‘The Irishman’, Robert De Niro has built an unforgettable legacy in the art of filmmaking.

At 81 years old, the actor has just premiered ‘The Alto Knights’, Barry Levinson’s latest film, where he portrays two mafia bosses, Frank Costello and Vito Genovese. In an interview with Fotogramas, De Niro was asked about retirement after so many years in the industry. However, far from wanting to step away, the actor is as alive as ever.

He doesn’t want to quit

“What would I do? I have too much going on. I have young children, and I simply don’t have the time. I have enough time to relax once in a while, but I don’t want to. Retirement means different things to different people, and I’m fine,” Robert De Niro declared. His words couldn’t make it clearer: he intends to continue in the entertainment industry.

The Italian-American has already taken on two projects in 2025: the Netflix miniseries ‘Zero Day’ and the film ‘The Alto Knights’, which debuted this weekend. With his performance, De Niro could improbably secure another Oscar nomination. If this happens, it would mark his tenth nomination across all categories, of which he has won only two: Best Supporting Actor for ‘The Godfather: Part II’ (1974) and Best Actor for ‘Raging Bull’ (1980). He narrowly missed out with performances in ‘Taxi Driver’ (1976), ‘The Deer Hunter’ (1978), ‘Awakenings’ (1990), ‘Cape Fear’ (1991), ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ (2012), ‘The Irishman’ (2019), and ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ (2023).
