The future of the MCU and the Avengers looks brighter than ever. Joe and Anthony Russo, directors of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, are set to return to Marvel Studios to direct the next two films of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

According to The Hollywood Reporter’s sources, the Russo brothers are in early talks to return to direct ‘Avengers 5′ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, which are scheduled for 2026 and 2027, and so far, have had a somewhat tumultuous development.

The Future of the Avengers in the Multiverse Saga

After the release of ‘Avengers Endgame’, the Marvel Cinematic Universe began to run into problems within what are known as Phases 4, 5, and 6, which comprise the Multiverse Saga. Originally, Kang the Conqueror was supposed to be the big villain of this saga, but Jonathan Majors’ legal problems due to domestic violence led to him being fired from the MCU and even changing the name from ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’ to simply ‘Avengers 5′. Its director, Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed ‘Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings’, stepped down in November 2023.

Since then, Marvel Studios has tossed around several names, including Shawn Levy, director of the upcoming ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, as a top choice to direct the now-named Avengers 5. For now, the film does not have a new title, although it is likely that we will have new details next Saturday, July 27, when Marvel holds its panel during San Diego Comic-Con.

For now, ‘Avengers 5′ is currently set to be released on May 1, 2026, while ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ will debut a year later on May 7, 2027.
