Update:

Although a fourth standalone Deadpool film is essentially off the table, that doesn’t mean the Merc with a Mouth has had his final word in the MCU. Reynolds hinted—while declining to pursue a hypothetical Deadpool 4—that he wouldn’t rule out a supporting role in another film. Adding to the speculation, the actor’s recent Instagram post has fans losing their minds.

While Deadpool & Wolverine welcomed both characters into the MCU, much of that film took place on Earth‑10005—the Fox-era X-Men world. In fact, many members of Fox’s X-Men—like James Marsden (Cyclops), Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier), and Ian McKellen (Magneto), among others—are set to appear in Avengers: Doomsday. Reynolds has now hinted on social media that Deadpool could be another mutant in the mix.

It’s an image that means nothing on its own—but it could mean absolutely everything. After all, Deadpool remains Marvel’s most popular character among casual audiences, thanks to his rapid-fire banter and R-rated escapades. The actor himself previously signaled that he’d have no qualms appearing in an X-Men or Avengers film, just not as a full-fledged member of either team.

“If Deadpool becomes an Avenger or an X‑Man, we’re at the end. That’s his wish fulfillment, and you can’t give him that. I’m writing a little something right now, that’s, I don’t know, it’s an ensemble, but I like that [Deadpool] is isolated.”

What’s next for Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in the MCU?

Like Deadpool, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine exudes charisma. Even back in the early 2000s X‑Men films, he was the franchise’s breakout mutant—Deadpool & Wolverine only underscored that appeal. When recently asked about a potential appearance in Avengers: Doomsday, even though nothing is confirmed, Jackman kept it cryptic yet playful:

“I really can’t say much. Except, when you say ‘appear,’ more like dominate and destroy every other character… I’m kidding... No, I really have nothing to add. And if I did, I would find a really cool way to not say it, but I actually have nothing to add.”

In reality, just as with Channing Tatum’s Gambit, Marvel Studios remains enthusiastic about Jackman—and continues to count on him for the future of the MCU.
