Ryan Reynolds proposed a Star Wars project for adults to Disney: “I’m surprised they don’t want to take a chance.”

The actor from Deadpool believes the saga could be reinvented with complex stories for a more mature audience.

Update:

The Star Wars universe is one of the most iconic and profitable franchises in cinema, but it’s also one of the most carefully managed in terms of tone and accessibility.

Since Disney acquired it, the movies and series set in George Lucas’s galaxy have maintained a rating designed for all audiences. However, Ryan Reynolds, known for breaking molds with Deadpool, thinks it’s time to change that.

The Canadian actor revealed in an interview with The Box Office Podcast that he pitched Disney a proposal to develop a story within the Star Wars universe for an adult audience, with an R rating. The idea isn’t to make the saga vulgar, but to explore deeper emotions and darker conflicts.

“I proposed to Disney to make a Star Wars story with an R rating,” Reynolds said. “It’s not about being vulgar. To me, that rating can be a Trojan horse to tell something with more emotional weight.”

He also pointed out that it’s not necessary to rely on iconic characters, since there are many supporting ones with potential to be explored from a more serious perspective.

Reynolds dreams of a Star Wars series or movie for a more mature audience.

That said, he made it clear that he has no intention of starring in the project. “That would be a bad decision. I’d love to write it, produce it, or be involved behind the scenes,” he explained.

For Reynolds, the secret of these big franchises lies in their ability to surprise the audience. “These types of stories work very well when there’s scarcity and surprise. Maybe with Disney+ we don’t have the first anymore, but the second is still possible.
