Santa Monica Studio working on a new IP over 20 years of God of War

What’s new in the pipeline at Santa Monica Studio?

God of War Ragnarok

The great work that Santa Monica Studio has done is undeniable, and the God of War franchise is undoubtedly a testament to what they have worked on over the years across multiple console generations and creative minds. This is the only new IP the studio has worked on in over 20 years, but all signs point to that changing.

Through a post discovered by a ResetEra user (via Eurogamer), the studio is apparently already “working on their new IP”, which is still unannounced. This was revealed through the profile of Glauco Longhi, who, after a few years away from the studio, has returned as character supervisor “on an unannounced project, and also to help the studio continue to push and raise the bar on character development for video games”.

The information comes from the creative’s “About” section, where, in addition to mentioning his career in the world of video game development, he comments on his position at the studio. “Santa Monica Studios presented the opportunity of coming back as Character Supervisor, looking after the entire Character Development pipeline, on their new IP, so here I am, thrilled to be back, working again with the crew and pushing Characters in videogames together.”

The Future of Santa Monica Studios

Earlier this year, a series of new job postings from the studio indicated that while they were already preparing for a new IP, they would not be leaving the world of God of War behind. Some of the job postings asked for candidates to be “fluent with the combat design choices, systems, mechanics, and enemies in God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök (2022).” Some of these job postings also focused on “an exciting new project,” adding weight to what Glauco Longhi wrote on his profile.

For now, we’ll have to wait a little longer to find out what projects Santa Monica Studio is working on.
