SDCC 24 Leaves Bad News for Netflix 'Bioshock' Adaptation

Roy Lee, producer of ‘Bioshock,’ expects a “more personal” approach to the video game world.

These days, the usual San Diego Comic-Con is taking place in the Californian city, so we can expect a lot of news about upcoming productions. One of them is related to the film adaptation of the popular saga ‘Bioshock’ being carried out by Netflix, and unfortunately, it is not to be optimistic.

If you read the headline, you might think that Netflix has decided to cancel the movie, but nothing could be further from the truth. However, don’t expect a big blockbuster, rather the opposite, as the platform has apparently decided to significantly lower its budget for this movie.

A more personal approach

“The new regime has lowered the budgets,” confirmed producer Roy Lee to Variety. “So we’re doing a much smaller version... It’s going to be a more personal point of view, as opposed to a grander, big project.

Fortunately, there are no changes in the team in charge of the movie, and Francis Lawrence (‘I Am Legend’, ‘Red Sparrow’) continues as director, while the script will be written by Michael Green (‘Logan’, ‘Blade Runner 2049′). No word yet on the setting of ‘Bioshock’, but it is expected to take place in the underwater city of Rapture from the first two games, rather than the floating city of Columbia from the fantastic Bioshock Infinite.

“We’re optimistic, we love it, it’s a big nightmare world that we all want to see come true,” Lee said a few months ago. However, after today’s news, we do not know if this “nightmare world” will remain large or if it will be significantly reduced in size. Obviously, ‘Bioshock’ still has no release date, not even a rough one.
