Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 only runs at 30 FPS on Xbox Series X|S to make the game feel “cinematic”
The VFX director at Ninja Theory has revealed that Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 won’t have a performance mode as a conscious decision.
Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 is one of the most anticipated games of 2024. It is not surprising, since it is the sequel to Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, and it will arrive on Xbox Series X|S and PC on May 21. A title that is set to mark a new milestone in what is possible with graphics in video games, since Ninja Theory has been working on it for years and everything that has been shown so far suggests that its visuals will be spectacular. The game will only run at 30 FPS on Xbox consoles.
This was confirmed by the visual effects director of Senua’s Sacrifice: Hellblade 2 while speaking with GamePro, ensuring that the decision to have the game run at 30 FPS instead of 60 is for creative reasons since this frame rate is more similar to the 24 FPS standard of the film industry. There will be no performance mode available, which means the game is completely locked at 30 FPS to offer a cinematic experience.
This has already happened in a PlayStation-exclusive
Ten years ago, when The Order 1886 was released on PS4, it was its director (Dana Jan from Ready at Dawn) who made a similar comparison, ensuring that not aiming to reach 60 FPS was part of the experience and reminding everyone of the 24 FPS of movies.
Returning to Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, Ninja Theory’s game will be released on May 21, 2024 on Xbox Series XS and PC. It will do so exclusively in digital format, since it will not have a physical edition.
