Calderón had a Twitter account, but did not post regularly. His last tweet dates from July 2022, when he celebrated the quarter century of the premiere of Men in Black. “25yrs one of the greatest movies I worked in was released: MIB. Thanks to Barry Sonnenfeld 4 this wonderful opportunity & to Rick Baker 4 his work on Mikey’s Head! It’s thanks to his extraordinary talent that MIB beat Boogie Nights at the MTV Movie Awards for Best HeadonAStick,” he humorously wrote.

In another tweet, the actor recalled with some pride that Mikey had to hold the prosthetic head of Calderón’s character “for hours” while shooting the film alongside Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. In this film, he played José, better known for his head than for his body.

The actor had previously been hospitalized for pneumonia, but the cause of death has not been made public. He passed away surrounded by his family, according to a representative. He is survived by his wife Karen Dakin and their children Patrick Calderón-Dakin and Johanna Calderón-Dakin, as well as several grandchildren.
