Seven years after Alfred’s death, Batman finally gains a new Pennyworth

Alfred’s influence continues through a surprising new character.

Update:

Alfred Pennyworth’s death has been one of the most tragic in DC Comics, and one that seems will take some time to retcon. Fortunately, a few weeks ago it was revealed that, finally—seven years after his tragic passing—someone would take on that all-important role within the Batcave. It had been promised as “a gift from beyond the grave,” in which a mysterious woman would take over the role in the current story arc written by Matt Fraction and illustrated by Jorge Jiménez—and today, that mystery has been solved.

Jorge Jiménez’s Instagram account has revealed the character’s identity. And although the exact family relationship hasn’t been disclosed, we finally have a name. Verity Pennyworth will be the name of this character, who will make her debut in the pages of Batman #12. This rules out possible characters who had already appeared in the canon, such as Daphne Pennyworth, Alfred’s niece.

Batman’s New Moral Compass

For now, Verity Pennyworth already has a set date for her comic book debut. She will appear in Batman #12 on August 5. Details about her remain a mystery to this day, with only the issue’s synopsis serving as our sole clue about her arrival:
