Shinji Mikami returns to independence with Unbound, a new AAA-focused studio
Update:

After leaving Tango Gameworks in 2023—the studio he founded and led through hits like The Evil Within and Hi-Fi Rush—the Shinji Mikami has officially revealed his new venture: Unbound. This new, fully independent company marks a significant return to form for the man who defined the survival horror genre, promising a future where creative freedom and high-end production value go hand in hand.

According to the studio’s official website, Unbound was technically established in late 2022, with business operations hitting full stride in May 2023. This suggests Mikami was already preparing his independence well before his departure from Tango.

A balanced approach to game development

While the studio is currently comprised of around 50 employees, there are ambitious plans to triple that headcount to 150 developers. Unbound isn’t just looking to compete with the industry’s biggest blockbusters on PlayStation 5, Xbox, and PC; the team is also interested in developing “challenging smaller titles.” This dual approach is a huge win for gamers, as it suggests the studio will produce both the massive, cinematic experiences we expect from Mikami and experimental, “AA” content that focuses on rich, immersive gameplay mechanics.

Mikami has recruited longtime collaborator Masato Kimura, the producer behind Ghostwire: Tokyo and Hi-Fi Rush. During a recent interview, Kimura emphasized that the team is aiming “for AAA quality and AA content, which is why we’re creating a title that offers a rich gaming experience and allows you to be completely immersed in its world.”

Mikami recently expressed his surprise regarding the brief closure of Tango Gameworks by Microsoft in 2024, noting that he believed the success of Hi-Fi Rush would have kept the studio secure. By establishing Unbound as a “fully independent company,” Mikami is taking direct control over his team’s destiny. For now, let’s wait and see what will Mikami wil bring in with his new studio.
