Anime
Solo Leveling is among the world’s most popular anime, but even that doesn’t save its animation studio from making millions in losses
Japanese animation and the enormous demands placed on its studios.

‘Solo Leveling’ has become the most successful anime in recent years, and that is no small feat when we are in an era in which works such as ‘Jujutsu Kaisen,’ ‘Kimetsu no Yaiba’ or ‘Soso no Frieren,’ among many others, have appeared. The adaptation of Chugong’s manhwa has won over fans all over the world, so it is hard to imagine that the animation studio in charge of the work is suffering great financial losses.
A-1 Pictures is a Japanese animation studio based in Suginami (Tokyo) founded in 2005 by Mikihiro Iwata, former producer of Sunrise. He has worked on such popular works as Your Lie in April, Sword Art Online or Solo Leveling, among many others. Incredibly, the studio lost around 178 million yen in the previous fiscal year, equivalent to 1,228,759.88 US dollars.

The demanding world of Japanese animation
A remarkable figure that represents A-1 Pictures’ biggest loss in almost ten years. Surprising? Given the global success of ‘Solo Leveling’, this may have come as a surprise to many, but the animation studio has more projects in hand, so anime fans are hoping that in the next fiscal year it will make a profit thanks to its good work and can continue working on adaptations of the level of Solo Leveling and other projects.
