Some are already calling this game the new ‘Concord’: Will it be the biggest flop of the year?

It was in 2023 that Bungie revealed the return of Marathon, a title that connoisseurs of first-person shooters sure remember. Yesterday morning, Saturday, April 12, the studio revealed the first official gameplay trailer after its announcement almost a year ago. However, the community has not been long in coming and has already begun to compare this title to one of last year’s biggest failures, Concord.

Marathon and its comparison with Concord

The first comparisons between Bungie’s next game and Concord began yesterday during the presentation of the trailer on YouTube. The video is short and shows part of the gameplay, how the encounters work, in addition to highlighting its colorful appearance and the announcement of an alpha test. A title that stands out for its mechanics, as well as the history of the studio that has developed games like Halo or Destiny.

For some players, however, the colors, spatial aspect, and genre seemed to change things, as these elements were enough to start comparing it to Concord. One user, @DmitryCee, joked, “This game looks like it’s going to make a concordillion dollars.” Another netizen named @elevenfly took things even further by stating, “Concord 2 looks amazing.”

Are Marathon and Concord alike?

Well, that’s a question that can be looked at from different angles. Both are shooters with a bright color palette, hero classes, and a space setting. But basically, you could describe several current shooters that manage to share some of these elements.

However, it should be noted that Marathon is a much older game in terms of development than Concord. The original version of Bungie’s game dates back to 1994, although a lot has changed in those almost 30 years. On the other hand, there are details such as the game modes, from Concord’s 5v5 against Marathon’s teams of 3. In addition, Marathon is an extraction shooter.

To compare Marathon and Concord on superficial issues is to make comments that have no basis in fact. For the time being, Marathon’s alpha playtest will begin on April 23rd, with a launch scheduled for September 23rd.
