Sony expects a decline in PS5 sales and confirms that there will be no new installments of its sagas until 2025

The Japanese company assures that it is working on new projects and that it will continue to devote resources to games as a service.

The next fiscal year will see a gradual decline in PS5 sales, Sony itself has reported in its presentation of financial results for the fiscal period ending December 31, 2023 (via VGC). Sony president, COO, and CFO, Hiroki Totoki, who replaced Jim Ryan at the helm of PlayStation, explained that the console is entering the second half of its lifecycle. He also noted that the company does not plan to release any first-party titles from existing franchises until after March 2025.

“Regarding PS5 hardware, which will enter its fifth year since launch, partially due to entering the latter half of the console cycle, we’re aiming to optimize sales with a greater emphasis on balance with profits. So we expect a gradual decline in unit sales from next fiscal year onwards.” He continues: “Regarding first-party software, we aim to continue to focus on producing high-quality productions and producing live service games. But while major projects are currently under development, we do not plan to release any new major existing franchise titles next fiscal year like God of War: Ragnarok and Marvel Spider-Man 2.”

PlayStation lowers expectations and will sell less than expected in these months

PlayStation has adjusted its forecasts to the new reality, which is lower than the initial expectations. Sony planned to sell 25 million consoles by April 1, 2024, but so far they have 16.4 million, so the new target is to reach 21 million units, which is 4 million less than expected. On the software side, the Japanese have boasted sales of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which now stands at 10 million copies. The series as a whole has surpassed 50 million units worldwide, including PC sales.

In recent months, the Japanese company has released Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, The Last of Us Part 1 and The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered. Helldivers II was released simultaneously on PS5 and PC and is off to a good start.
